This week at Hero Hypertext, we’re having a live chat with veteran superhero Candela, and discussing her new book, Learning to Fly: a memoir<\/em>,\u00a0which comes out next week.<\/p>\n

\"CandelaHero Hypertext:<\/strong>\u00a0As they say on television, our guest needs no introduction. Everyone in New Chicago is familiar with her. She’s saved the city more times than anyone can count. Candela, welcome to Hero Hypertext.<\/p>\n

Candela:<\/strong> Thank you so much, Gary. I’m glad to be here. I’ve been reading your blog for years. You have a great site.<\/p>\n

HH:<\/strong> That’s nice of you to say. I’ll be sure to sign the check for your endorsement before you leave. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

C:<\/strong> Seriously. You’re doing great things for the caped \u00a0community.<\/p>\n

HH:<\/strong> So, let’s jump right into it. You’re retiring at the end of the month, is that correct?<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

C:<\/strong> Yes. In many ways, my retirement is what has driven me to write this book.<\/p>\n

HH:<\/strong> How so? I mean, you’re a pretty big celebrity. You have your own blog. You’re very active in social media.\u00a0I can’t imagine there’s a lot about you that we don’t already know.<\/p>\n

C:<\/strong> You’d be surprised.<\/p>\n

HH:<\/strong> What sort of surprises can we expect in your book. Are you going to tell us you’re really a super-villain in disguise?<\/p>\n

C:<\/strong> No, I hope not. I mean, I hope the city’s opinion of me doesn’t change after reading it.<\/p>\n

HH:<\/strong> You’ve always been pretty open about your caped persona, are we going to get a chance to learn about the woman behind the mask?<\/p>\n

C:<\/strong> Quite a bit, actually. I’m not holding anything back. I even divulge my real identity.<\/p>\n

HH:<\/strong> And the heroes you fought alongside?<\/p>\n

C:<\/strong> Many of the people I knew — heroes and villains — are long gone. Their secrets don’t need to be kept anymore.<\/p>\n

HH:<\/strong>\u00a0Well, I’m sure our readers are dying to know more about you. Can you give us a sneak preview of some of the revelations we can expect?<\/p>\n

C:<\/strong> Well… okay. Here’s one. Did you know that before I was Candela, I used to fight crime using another name?<\/p>\n

HH:<\/strong> You’re messing with me, right? I know everything about you, and I’ve never heard this before.<\/p>\n

C:<\/strong> See? You don’t know everything.<\/p>\n

HH:<\/strong>\u00a0Okay, I guess not. What was your name?<\/p>\n

C:<\/strong> I was known as Lightshow.<\/p>\n

HH:<\/strong> Lightshow? Wasn’t she a founding member of the Night Guard? Night Patrol? Night…?<\/p>\n

C:<\/strong> Nightwatch.<\/p>\n

HH:<\/strong> Nightwatch. Yeah. She didn’t have your kind of power. She was a second-stringer at best. And she was… well, no offense, but she was a lot younger than you.<\/p>\n

C:<\/strong> That’s why I had to write this book. I want to set the record straight before…<\/p>\n

HH:<\/strong> Before? Don’t leave our readers hanging.<\/p>\n

C:<\/strong> Let’s just say that once I retire, you won’t be seeing me around. I’m going to travel.<\/p>\n

HH:<\/strong> Good news for the villains in New Chicago. What will we do without you?<\/p>\n

C:<\/strong> There’s always the Nightwatch. LOL!<\/p>\n

HH:<\/strong> You’ve been a wonderful guest, but we’re running out of time. Let me ask you one more question.<\/p>\n

C:<\/strong> Anything. Anything at all.<\/p>\n

HH:<\/strong> Do you have any regrets? Did you make any mistakes along the way?<\/p>\n

C:<\/strong> Mistakes? I’ve made a lot of mistakes.\u00a0Hundreds. Thousands. I think that’s true of everyone. We all make mistakes. How we learn from our mistakes is what makes life so interesting.<\/p>\n

HH:<\/strong> Anything you’d do differently?<\/p>\n

C:\u00a0<\/strong>I wouldn’t make my costume white. It’s a bitch to keep clean!<\/p>\n
